The practice of transcendental meditation brings coherence and harmony to create a healing effect, writes ADITI SHRIVASTAVA
The Vedas say that all negativity falls off in the presence of pure knowledge, just as darkness disappears when light is brought in. Fighting darkness does not remove it; it is the onset of light, which does. Likewise, to deal with the numerous problems we face, we need to rise above them and bring in another element. “Problems cannot be solved at the level of the problems, ” Maharishi Mahesh Yogi said. The Yoga Sutras say, ‘Tats sannidhau vairatyaagah’. In the vicinity of coherence, the yogic influence — unifying, integrating and harmonious influence — conflicting tendencies do not arise. Decades ago, under Maharishi’s guidance, research was conducted on groups of people practising Transcendental Meditation (TM), and advanced meditation techniques.
To everyone’s surprise, a coherent influence was observed and it was verified by sophisticated modern science techniques — that by creating large groups of people practising TM, TM-Siddhi programme and Yogic Flying collectively in one place, one can raise the collective consciousness of society.
This phenomenon was termed The Maharishi Effect. ‘Maharishi’, means the great knower of pure knowledge, and in the presence of this pure knowledge, positivity thrives, removing negative tendencies. Also, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi predicted this effect much before science verified it and hence the name.
We could understand coherence from everyday experience. We know that good news makes us smile. When shared with friends or family, it spontaneously spreads the smile across many faces and happiness can be felt not just within but also in the environment, creating an effect that binds everyone into one. This is due to the togetherness, the coherence generated by the group. In science, coherence is when the waves are in sync with each other, resulting in Constructive Interference. This can be understood as the N2 effect. When two loud speakers are moved in close proximity, at the right distance and position, that produces four times the effect. TM is a simple, natural and effortless technique of meditation to create this positivity at a very large scale and it is proven.
It is as scientific as it is Vedic. The Vedasdescribe the highest way of removing negativity — by averting suffering before it arises, Hayem dukham anagatam. Research by scientists across the world has shown that when a specific number of people in an area practise TM together, the sattva, positivity generated resulting from coherence is so phenomenal, that it can improve the quality of life of the area, improving the collective consciousness of the people. This leads to an Invincible State for society, that is, a state of progressive growth, of stability where no negative influences will disrupt societies and they will be able to rise to true sovereignty and harmony amongst themselves. This state of invincibility is achieved by creating the Maharishi Effect, where a small percentage of people — the Invincibility number — meditate and practise advanced techniques together.
Scientific data is available where crime rate was seen dropping in a city where the Invincibility number for the city was met, or the cities experienced an improved quality of life or less auto accidents and many other examples. These are effortless techniques, which not just benefit the individual practitioner miraculously, in terms of better health, improved work-life balance and personal relationships, less stress and burn-out, improved problem-solving ability, growth in intelligence and creativity, along with self-development and evolution but are also characterised by enhanced mind-body coordination, training the individual to think and act from the level of pure awareness, of transcendence which is the field of all possibilities, making action very, very powerful and aligned with the evolutionary direction of Nature.
Scientists could also see enhanced brainwave coherence, never seen with any other meditation methods, indicating orderliness and an influence of harmony and positivity in the individual’s environment. The result of these studies on the Maharishi Effect have repeatedly supported that violent crime and other measures of social disorder can be effectively reduced through coherence creating groups. Everyday, more than yesterday, we do need something which will lead us to a happier, safer and less chaotic society, something which will elevate Collective Consciousness to a level where our society becomes perfect, evolutionary and orderly with sattva being given a chance to dominate.
